rainy days and mondays

The last few days have produced some crazy storms here in the Chicago area.  We really needed rain, but man, these storms were seriously intense.  They were short but mighty.  I lived in Florida for one hurricane season back in 2005, and I have to say - the way that the trees were bending yesterday morning was pretty reminiscent of a hurricane.  There was also hail and all sorts of other stormy madness.  I was pretty bummed about the fact that they majorly damaged our sunflowers and some of the other plants in our garden (along with the wood separator fence that sits between us and our neighbors, and even some street lights), but it was also reassuring to know that the earth around here was finally getting some hydration.  Plus, you have to admit that the moments after a storm are pretty magical.  There's just something about the way that the light reflects onto everything when the sun starts peaking through the clouds again, and the way the birds sing in a different tone.  (Speaking of birds singing after storms, the quote I put onto the photo above - taken with my iPhone shortly after yesterday's storm - is one of my all-time favorites).

The rainstorms were probably the most excitement I had all weekend.  Robbie is on the road with the band right now, and I purposely decided to lay low.  I didn't make any plans with friends (except for a lunch date with my mom yesterday), and tried to keep work to a minimum.  I ran some errands, did yoga, caught up on phone calls, read, and watched a movie.  According to my mom, I haven't been able to sit still since I was born.  So I've been making an effort to be a little lazier in 2012 than I ever have before.  I like to call it "boring but blissful."

And now it is officially Monday.  And also July!  Since it's a brand new month, I hope you'll take a couple of minutes to check out our new and returning sponsors by clicking on the pretty little ads hanging out over there in the right sidebar.  It's a really fantastic group, and I've been enjoying visiting their shops and blogs over the past few days.  (If you're viewing this in a reader, just click here).

What was your weekend like?  Did the summer storm madness hit where you live?

  7. While the rest of the country has had problems with major heat, drought, fires, storms, etc., it hasn't even been close to hot here. Considering what everyone else is dealing with, I'm not complaining about it.

  8. This is a really nice quote and picture! Thanks for sharing--I've never seen/heard that quote before now.

And I leave it to you to stick songs in my head now. Your posts have done this a few times before and now today I'm singing "Hangin around/Hangin around/like some kind of lonely clown/..." and well, you know the rest ; ]

The weather here has been pretty steady, though Saturday night & Sunday morning it was pretty overcast--no rain as far as I know. But I'm so sorry about your plants! I can't imagine how devastated I'd be if that happened to our plants here : ( I hope they end up being ok!

  9. We seemed to miss out on the storm maddness in NYC... but it's been unbearably hot (although today wasn't so bad... it was only in the 80s).

  11. Oh my gosh, we had a crazy storm yesterday morning! We woke up, with thunder rumbling constantly. The sky was DARK and a weird shade of green, and we hesitantly went to work with lightning striking overhead, and it was so dark for a good part of the morning and the thunder didn't stop! Thankfully nothing much happened, and it cleared up later on in the day but I was a bit frightened to be honest! Sad about your plants!
