Lazy Weekend + Garden Beginnings

This was Robbie's last weekend in town for a while, and I'm taking a little road trip next weekend, so we decided that this weekend would a nice, lazy (for the most part) one spent close to home.  On Friday night we went to a birthday party, on Saturday we hung out with an old friend then went out to a relaxed group dinner, and on Sunday I worked a little and we spent time on the beginnings of this year's organic container garden.

I love snapping pictures of the garden when it's just starting out every year.  At first glance, there really isn't anything to see.  But I love capturing the tiny details of the fresh dirt and plants just starting to sprout.  In a few weeks, it will all look completely different, and it's pretty cool to look back at photos and see how far it's come.  Until very recently, I was admittedly one of those people who thought that the act of gardening sounded excruciatingly boring.  I'm so glad I decided to give it a chance two summers ago.  There is honestly something amazing about putting a seed in the dirt, adding some water and sunshine, and literally watching it grow into a full-blown plant or flower (especially when you can step out your back door and return 30 seconds later with something healthy and fresh for dinner!).

Anyone else have a blissfully boring weekend working on their gardens or doing other lazy outdoor activities?

  1. I used to love gardening, before my son was born. Now it's all I can do to make myself go out and pull the weeds. Right now, I am thinking of ways to procrastinate that little chore! Thank you for the nudge.

  3. I'm terrible with plants, but maybe I should try it out again. Hubby does do the gardening, and we had some awesome chile peppers last year! Your photos are fabulous. Love that 4th one - awesome.
Glad to hear you had a nice laid back weekend. We all need those kind.

  4. I love gardening, I find it relaxing and rewarding. I'm not as lucky as you are, we only have a terrace and a balcony, but I still grown plants, herbs and a few veg.
I love picking my cherry tomatoes and 5 minutes later chopping them for a salad. Those photos are beautiful.

    1. We actually don't have a yard either - just a balcony style deck and a tiny patch of dirt underneath. We built small raised beds for the dirt patch and used containers on the balcony. I never thought we'd be able to have a garden but containers are the way to go!

  5. I wish I was better at gardening, but so far I haven't had much luck. I spent a lazy weekend working (a little bit) on our sailboat! Found you via the Etsy Blog Team :)

  6. These pictures are so pretty!!! Do you suggest any good plants to start out growing in containers?? I would love to grow at least one veggie if it's not too late this year! :-D

    1. Herbs are a great place to start! My first plant was a basil plant. Second was cherry tomatoes. You can do it!

  7. Yay!! Sprouts!! Great photos.

I only got half my little garden planted before the "severe thunderstorms" hit -- but my garden is well-watered now! I'll plant the rest next weekend.

  8. I had a lazy weekend too and probably spent more time than I should have inside. =) I did actually transplant a few flowers though! Your garden already looks great!

  9. YAY! I love when the little seedlings start popping up. It's always such an exciting feeling. My garden is about at the same stage as yours. :)

  10. This post reminded me of my mom...she always starts little seedlings herself every year. People that can make little plants grow amaze me!

  11. We also worked in our garden this weekend. For a few years I try to grow some vegetables, fruit and herbs and I love it! I still make a lot of mistakes but that's part of the fun/learning.
And my favorite: peas. Nowhere as good as fresh from the garden :-)

  14. so pretty! My husband has been telling me over and over again that he'd like me to do something with our patio/backyard area and I am so not a gardener. The whole experience is just intimidating but with all of these pretty pictures I'm looking at easy ways to start. Any ideas?

    1. I would start with herbs. Our first plant was a basil plants. But really, you can do almost anything in containers. Just google "container gardening" or "urban gardening" and you'll be amazed at all of the resources! :)
