Taking a Spring Break

Taking a Spring Break

I usually take a week off from the blog during our annual trip to Arizona in April, but since it's looking like that trip won't work out this year (for several reasons), I've decided to push my blog break up to this and part of next week. It's the kids' spring break from preschool and activities, so we surprised them yesterday with a mini trip into the city for museums and an overnight staycation. Robbie has a few days home from the road, and it's been so long since we've been able to just spend time together as a family. I'll still be posting over on Instagram (especially to my IG Stories!) and Facebook, but I'll be saving new content for here on the blog until next week.

Speaking of the blog and Instagram, be honest with me - do you guys still read blogs? There has obviously been a pretty massive shift over the past few years from blogs to social media, and these days, the vast majority of audience engagement and traffic happens on our Instagram. We still have steady traffic to the blog, and I actually enjoy writing blog pieces more than anything else, so we're not going anywhere - but it is always a bit of a struggle, from a business and personal perspective, to determine how to divide up time and content. I admittedly spend more time on Instagram than I do reading blogs, but I do still read them, and really enjoy it. And Instagram can be so challenging, so I am always crossing my fingers there will be a shift back to blogging. I'm interested in hearing your take.

Enjoy the last week of March, and I'll see you in a week!

  1. I definitely still read blogs. I may not be the norm, but honestly, instagram alone will never be enough to satisfy me - I want to read, and blogs give me that. Enjoy you break! Hopefully, since you won't get to go to Arizona, you'll have warm weather in Chicago :)

    1. I absolutely agree! I sometimes find IG to be overwhelming with all of the "fast content" too. I especially love blogs (like yours!) that are really good reads.

  2. I can definitely see a shift in my habits. I used to read blogs almost religiously and now I definitely tend more to social media, however, there are some titles that immediately make me open the blog post and read it, and it is still as enjoyable as it used to be.

  3. Please keep blogging! I like Instagram but I feel like it's such an instant gratification thing that honestly stresses me out instead of relaxing me like when I read blogs.

    1. I will absolutely keep blogging! I love the depth of blogging more than the instant gratification, as you mentioned, of IG. As a reader/follower, I often feel overwhelmed by the sheer volume of content on IG.

  4. I still read blogs and after shifting away from them for a bit, am reading more and still quite interested in authentic content. The algorithms and attempts to reorganize to generate revenue on Facebook and Instagram have me ready to leave both platforms some days. I wonder if we might be experiencing "peak social media" right now, with a return to slower and less-monetized consumption... or maybe I just hope for that!

    1. Such great points! As someone who makes a living off blogging/social media, I am grateful for the opportunities to be creative and share on these platforms while supporting my family. But I agree that content needs to be authentic. There needs to be a balance between constant advertisements and genuine content.
